Southwest Florida packing mistakes are common — guests over-pack on cold-weather layers or forget the one thing they really needed. Here’s a practical guide based on what actually works for a Naples or Lely vacation.
The Non-Negotiables (Any Season)
- SPF 50+ sunscreen, and lots of it. The Florida sun is intense year-round, even in winter. Bring more than you think you’ll need — beach pharmacies charge a premium for the same bottle.
- Polarized sunglasses. The Gulf water reflects hard. Good sunglasses make beach days significantly more comfortable.
- Reef-safe water shoes or sandals. Sand can get hot enough to burn in summer and you’ll want something between the car park and the sand.
- A light rain jacket. Even in winter, the occasional afternoon shower happens. In summer, count on it daily.
- A reusable water bottle. Hydration matters more here than most places. Bring a large insulated one.
Packing for Winter Season (December–April)
Pack mostly warm-weather clothing, but bring one or two light layers for evenings. Temperatures can drop into the 50s after dark in December and January. A light cardigan or long-sleeve layer makes evening dining on Fifth Avenue much more comfortable. You won’t need a coat.
Packing for Summer (May–September)
Think lightweight and breathable — linen, cotton, and moisture-wicking fabrics. Pack fewer pieces and plan to rinse and repeat. Bug spray is worth including, especially if you’re planning any outdoor adventure or Everglades exploration. Afternoon storm gear (a small umbrella or packable rain jacket) will get used.
What to Leave Home
Heavy jeans, formal shoes beyond one smart-casual pair, and excessive layers. Naples dining is elegant but rarely requires a jacket. Most of what you need for the beach is available locally if you forget it — though you’ll pay for the convenience.
