The Saugatuck Chain Ferry

The Saugatuck Chain Ferry is one of the last hand-cranked chain ferries in the United States, and has been carrying passengers across the Kalamazoo River since 1838. The short, charming crossing is a piece of living history — and the most scenic way to reach Mount Baldhead and the path over to Oval Beach.

It’s a small experience that captures the unhurried, old-world character of the whole town.
